about palliative care

Palliative care is the art of alleviating suffering in a medically complex situation, often, but not always, in the face of a severe prognosis.

We believe that palliative care should begin with every patient at the beginning of every major diagnosis because we should always be looking for ways to help you feel better and function better during a difficult time.

Palliative care is useful for complex symptom management and pain management in cancer, sickle cell disease, neurologic disease, and many other diseases, including alleviating suffering as one approaches death. Palliative care balances the side effects and interactions of your medications with the benefit you experience. Palliative care emphasizes YOUR values and YOUR priorities in life.

Some people confuse palliative care with hospice care. While palliative care has been shown to improve quality and quantity of life in hospice situations, they are not the same. Palliative care applies to any situation where complex symptoms can be improved, while hospice care applies only to the final period of life before death. The two areas often work closely together to provide the best options for patients.

Dr. Cohn is qualified to treat both children and adults for palliative care needs. If you or your loved one is suffering, we offer hope.
